One of the Tribe: Building a dream bike - The Yeti SB66C

Tags: Yeti

A few months ago i got the chance to build what i'd call a dream bike, welcome to the build thread!

Having been back into mountain biking a while and having started to push the limits of a 100mm travel xc hard tail I'd started to lust after a full suspension setup, fate as it goes was on my side and I managed to acquire a Yeti SB66C and Rockshox Pike fork, a great basis for building an all mountain full suspension dream bike,

The frame and fork were used but in great condition, here they are straight out of the box. The frame ias a 2012 Yeti SB66C with a fox rp23 kashima rear shock and the fork a Rockshox Pike 160 Solo Air RCT3. Frame is a small.

With a 160mm travel up front and 152mm rear travel it should be quite adequate at soaking up those hits i've been struggling with on the 100mm. Thankfully the frame is Carbon so whilst heavier then the carbon stumpjumper ht its replacing it should still be pretty light! If you want  a review of the SB66C in general (its been about a few years now) checkout this bikemag review.

On with the build! ( small disclaimer here, i built the bike and took the pics months ago - they arent all great and i cant remember the full order )

Braking: for brakes i went with Shimano XTR Trails with 180mm XT-Saint Ice-Tech rotors, i'd ran these brakes with 160mm rotors on the stumpjumper and loved them but i figured i'd be able to tackle more GNAR on the new bike, so plumped for some larger discs.

(when i took the photo i didnt have a 180mm post adapter, doh poor planning - fitted later)

The wheels are 26inch Hope Pro Evo II's on Stans ZTR Crests setup tubeless with Continental Trail King 2.2 Tires straight off the stumpjumper, here is one with the 180mm rotor

Apparently i at this point i got excited and started slapping stuff on the bike, it already had a nice hope headset fitted so left that in. Added a Raceface Turbine bar with odi-xtreme lock on grips, mounted to a 50mm spank spike race 'bearclaw edition' stem.

(sorry this picture is madness lol)

Drivetrain wise its full Shimano XT (2x10), the shifters are mounted to the brakes using Shimano I-Spec mounting system. Again these came off the stumpjumper.

The pedals are DMR Vaults (Brendog Edition)

After this i again seem to have got impatient and skipped ahead! here is an almost complete picture, still has a 160 rotor on the rear i think as i was waiting for the adapter.

Still missing the chain too .. and some temporary cabling lol. Rockshox reverb seatpost fitted and an SDG Circuit Mountain Ti saddle.

And some complete ones!

The full spec deck is as follows:

I think the only thing that has changed in the months since these were taken is i switched the spacers for some hope ones, as for the bike itself ... did the reality live up to the dream? well .. all i can say is HELL YES, the bike is out of this world .. hands down the best i ever rode, climbs efficiently, nails descents .. so light and so far very reliable!

Hope you enjoyed the build! Loving being one of the tribe!
